I know, I know.. I was supposed to post this years ago at this point and I truly feel bad but I'm here now so that counts right?
So you're here because you want to learn how to start a blog or maybe you already have but missed some steps? Whatever the reason may be, I am so glad that you are here. :) If you don't know me by now my name is Tarin and I've started my blog about 6 years ago as an outlet to help with my postpartum depression when I had my daughter. I literally had no idea what I was doing, all I knew was that I had to let all of this out some way/some how. Starting my blog also positioned me to dive into graphic design and content creation which is now my business (Tarin Souriya Creative Studio).
Okay enough of that! Let's get right into it... do you have your notepad? It's going to be A LOT of information.
High-level overview looks a little something like this:
What is your blog name?
What is your blog about? (niche, talking points, direction)
Choosing a platform
Hosting + free alternative
Designing your WordPress/Wix
This is a step that you probably already have down, right? I'm sure you already have an idea about the things that you want to blog about or share which is great! If you don't, that is okay too and you still have time to figure that out. You want to think about the purpose for it as well; here's a few questions to ask yourself -
What is the purpose for my blog?
Am I just using this platform to exercise my writing skills?
Do I want to make money from my blog?
Am I going to add different things to my website/blog (YouTube, store, services, etc)
Will I eventually need add ons such as newsletters, ads, etc
Do I want to hire a professional to design my blog or do it on my own?
Having the answer to the questions above can help you determine the proper platform to use as well as how to launch! Don't get scared though! Get a journal and get in your creative bag - find some inspiration for what you want your blog to look like, how you want things to flow, and start a long list of things that you want to talk about.

Alright! Now you have your "niche" (yall, I hate that word) lol but that's for another time. At this point you have put some good thought and time into what you want your blog to be and the intention of it, so let's build it up boo! I have used just about every single hosting platform you could think of to host my blog on in the past 6 years so I will give you a quick run down of the few that I would recommend + their benefits:
WordPress: Flexible and Adaptable, User friendly, Themes offer multiple different options, and their sites rank high.
Wix: Wix offers an excellent drag-and-drop editor for creating small websites. It is the only website builder that scores 4.5 out of 5 points. There are over 800 free templates available that can be customized as you like. Wix provides its own web hosting as well as domain names (free and paid).
Weebly: Overall, Weebly scored 4 out of 5, placing in fourth position behind Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy. Weebly’s standout strength is its value for money – it came top in this category with full marks thanks to its free plan and its selection of affordable premium packages. It isn't the best out of the bunch.
I would recommend a platform that you can purchase your domain and hosting in the same place - if not, I would recommend purchasing your domain from GoDaddy or Bluehost.
So now that we've decided on your name, got your niche or niche(s) down, you've purchased your domain and hosting site and now you're ready to design your blog! YouTube University - if you take the time to learn you can truly take in so much and apply it to your blog but the templates are very much a drag and drop situation so don't overthink it boo! If you want to add a little razzle dazzle then set some time aside to learn a few things.
Also - if you're willing to invest in your blog right away I would love to design your blog for you :) hehehe
Come up with a marketing plan on how you're going to announce your new and exciting blog! You can easily start by doing a countdown or start your email list and get people to join by giving them the first look at your new blog. After that sis you're ready to launch! Hit the publish button neowwwwwwwww!
Words of encouragement from someone who was once in your shoes: JUST DO IT! You're reading this post for a reason and you want to start a blog for a reason. Don't find every reason to not go through with it instead find reasons on why it's beneficial to you whether you're doing it for personal or to actually make a profit. We all have to start somewhere - create your own lane and stay in it! We need you, your experiences, your words, and so on.
